Israeli stem cell donator saves life of reservist comrade's father

IDF reservists reunite in emotional encounter after anonymous stem cell donor finds out his donation saved his comrade’s relative

When Elyassaf Steiner met the man who had donated stem cells and saved his father’s life, he was shocked to recognize him as "P." a fellow IDF reservist. “Someone who stood beside me did something so monumental for me — without knowing it, and without me knowing,” he shared emotionally.
Elyassaf, a 40-year-old school principal from Tel Aviv, was unaware that his buddy who had been an IDF comrade, serving with him during one of his reserve tours in the armored corps battalion, was the one who saved his father’s life. When the two finally met, they ran toward each other and embraced in a deeply emotional moment.

Elyassaf’s father, Moshe Steiner, had been diagnosed with MDS syndrome, a condition that puts patients at high risk of developing acute leukemia. Doctors told him he urgently needed a stem cell transplant, and a matching stem cell donor was found through Ezer Mizion’s International Bone Marrow Registry. “I was in life-threatening danger,” Moshe recalled. “When I was told a stem cell donor had been found, it was an immense relief.”
"P.," a 23-year-old intelligence officer, registered with Ezer Mizion as a potential stem cell donor when he enlisted in 2021 in the IDF. Shortly after October 7, he received a call from Ezer Mizion notifying him that he was a match to a patient.
Suspecting it to be an attempt at identity theft, he was initially skeptical and verified the call independently before going ahead with the process. The transplant was performed in February 2024, and within weeks, Moshe learned that it had succeeded and that he was on the road to recovery.

Moshe recently requested to meet the donor who had saved his life, leading to a moving reunion attended by his extended family. When "P" entered the meeting space, both he and Elyassaf were stunned to recognize each other. What had been an anonymous life-saving act became a deeply personal gesture.

For "P.," whose mother had passed away from cancer five years ago, this moment was a deeply meaningful closure. “Helping save a friend’s father’s life means so much to me, because I know that I spared him the pain that I experienced when I lost my mother,” he said.
Elyassaf reflected, “'P.' made my dream come true—someone who stood beside me and without knowing did something incredible for me.”
The meeting was unprecedented, according to Dr. Bracha Zisser, director of the Ezer Mizion Bone Marrow Registry. "The satisfaction of saving someone’s life is enormous, but - in this case - it is compounded many times over.”
